There are a lot of company's out there that market their films as a Hurricane film, however that is not true. No film is truly a hurricane film, and no film is full proof when it comes to a storm. We carry films like the others do, however we classify them as safety & security films because that is what they truly are. There are many types of this film on the market, and just like anything else there is the good and the bad. There are also many different manufactures of the films to.
To start we are not trying to talk you out of a security film in any way; it does have it's advantage. It still holds glass together upon impact. Right now, if something does impact the window with nothing on it, it will shatter into lots of pieces, the film will help hold it together. Window film will also help strengthen the glass some but will never exceed what your window is rated for. We just don't want it to be sold and/or miss lead as the sole hurricane protection; although it is a partial hurricane protection. When you compare it to other hurricane protection it is an excellent bargain.
Comparing it to hurricane shutters or laminate windows, it is a considerable amount cheaper. Directly comparing the two laminate window are more than 10 times the cost of the window film. If your windows are newer and in good condition ( window wind speed 125mph or greater ) with the film on them they are very close to the same strength as the a laminate window, which most of them are rated at 155mph, the film would carry the same wind speed as the window is rated for. Now that we have compared window film to laminate windows lets compare it to shutters. With shutters most of your general shutters are four times of the cost of the film and might only be used once or twice every couple if years. They also have to be stored if you have corrugated shutters and maintenanced if you have roll up shutters, which can be costly. Window film on the other hand is up all the time, working every day for solar control, which is cost return right away. There is no maintenance, no storage, no pre-storm assembly, and no loss of view during a storm. With window film you not only get 98% UV protection you also get up to a 70% heat reduction with a tinted film. By the time you use your shutters a couple of times the film will have already paid for its self and saved you money.
To sum everything up, we are not trying to talk you out of film because in most cases it is the most economical choice for window protection. Now with progress energy giving a rebate, and with a tax rebate, it makes it more economical to choose film over shutters than it ever has. Hopefully this has helped you in your search for film and has answered some of your questions. There is still a lot more information that pertains to window film, and this issue.
